Is it a good time to buy Silver?

Silver has crashed by 11% today with sell off volume 6 times the average trading volume.

It has already broken out the floor at $41.7 and then another floor at $33.6.

6 month graph

IF it breaks below $33.5 then a good support could be seen at around $22-$25.

With an upside of touching $45-$47 in 3-4 months.

How to correctly calculate equity share for vc/angel investment

Let’s say someone is valuing your venture for $1m and willing to invest $100k in your business, how much equity you should offer in exchange:

Our intuition says 10%, but that is incorrect and many enterpreneurs make this mistake. The correct equity stake is 9.1%, here is how it works:

1) Value of your enterprise (before investment also called Pre-money) estimated by the investor: $1,000,000

2) Money put in by the investor: $100,000

3) New Value (Post money valuation): Sum of above two, i.e. $1,1000,000

Equity held by the investor now = $100,000/$1,1000,000 = 9.1% (approx)

Or, to simplify it, you can calculate investor equity, as

= Investment/(Pre-money valuation + Investment)

Entrepreneurs need to keep the above in mind so that they don’t lose in the transaction.

A day with new generation beurocrats of India

Morning of Thu, Feb 18, 2011

I arrived at Bhopal to meet Mr. Sheo Shekhar Shukla, the Chief Executive Officer MP National Rural Employment Government Act. Contrary to what many of us believe, I found him extremely busy handling daily job.

He was in fact operating like a Corporate CEO, with a sense of urgency and accuracy for the tasks in hand. His team was working with him until 8pm at night, which is very unusual when we thing about government job in India.

During the course of the day, I also met Mr. Manoj Jhalani, Commissioner Rajya Shiksha Kendra,MP, who again was handling every task with utmost detail, not to leave any mistake happen on the ground. He made sure that everything in education is handled very efficiently and accurately, along with finding creative ways to get more from less staff.

Unfortunately, I did not have the confirmed ticket back to Delhi, so Mr. Shukla requested one of his friends Mr. Surendra Mohan Sharma, to see if any seat is available in the train from Bhopal to Delhi. It may be hard to believe, but it is real that Mr. Sharma came all the way to station to help me get a seat, even though he was off duty that day.

Thanks to Mr. Sharma, I was able to get a seat in the train and had safe trip back home

I am Government, and I am exempted!

I  called NYS department of taxation and finance today to pay some tax liabilities. While the person on the other side was very helpful, when asked about if I could pay the taxes by credit card he said that there is a convenience fee of 0.45% (minimum $1).

So, to pay a tax liability of $3.58, I paid $4.58 (not a big amout by any means) but I was confused, why?

In my little business experience, I know that credit card companies bar their merchants from charging a fee for credit card transactions. Here is a reference link:http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_merchants_charge_a_fee_for_using_a_credit_card

So, I am surprised on how come a government agency is exempted from this universal rule?

Goldman.. or Government’s Old Man

NY Fed Chairman ‘Stephen Friedman’ bought Goldman shares late last year while NY Fed played a key role in getting:

-Goldman a speedy approval to become a bank and
-A $10 billion capital injection from tax dollars.

Since then Mr. Friedman’s Goldman shares have risen $1.7 million in value, while most of American’s have lost wealth.

According to article published in WSJ, Mr. Friedman says none of this involved any conflict. To make sure, he is covered, he even got a waiver from NY Fed to buy the shares. But the question is “Does getting a waiver relieves a high profile public service member from his/her ethical responsibility to resign first and then buy the shares rather than using his position and connection to benefit himself and then leaving the job (as Mr. Friedman is planning, i.e. stepping down at the end of this year)

Do you think Mr. Friedman’s action should be investigated?
